Agent on a sidewalk: new reading of Giddens' sociology
Popis výsledku anglicky
The book is a thorough reinterpretation of Anthony Giddens' sociology. It develops the plan that Giddens outlines in his later work to transform sociology into a science of the interconnection of time and space. The book is divided into two parts, between which is placed a series of philosophically oriented intermezzos that deal particularly with human subjectivity. In the first part, the author discusses in detail the main themes and concepts of Giddens' theoretical sociology. The book is based on a plan presented in Giddens' later work, but where it is no longer developed in detail. He therefore returns to earlier works from the 1970s and 1980s. The problem, however, is that the older work is primarily aimed at solving the so-called problem of structure and agency. It thus assumes the sovereignty of the actor and structural social conditions as a necessary point of reference for the analysis. In the first part, I gradually come to the conclusion that neither the action nor the figure of the actor can be assumed as if it were a metaphysical assumption (actor can be assumed in a metaphysical sense); rather, it must be understood contextually and an attempt made to explain its genesis. In the case of the notion of structure, I draw on Giddens' suggestion to understand structure as a sequence, which also fits with the author's intention to interpret it as an enabling rather than constraining factor. The first section concludes with the thesis that Giddens' conception of the actor and his subjectivity is untenable and needs to be revised. In the subsequent series of intermezzos, I seek theoretical resources for an alternative conception of human subjectivity. The starting point here is the relativization or historicization of the Cartesian conception of subjectivity, which I then link in particular to Weber's sociology of religion. I seek to understand Cartesian subjectivity as specifically modern, similarly to how Weber interprets Protestant ethics and the spirit of capitalism. I then borrow two more psychological or soteriological types - the ascetic and the mystic - from Weber's sociology of religion, which I consider two archetypal forms of modern subjectivity. Later, I link them to two developmental phases of modernity. In the second part of the book, I try to develop my own interpretation of sociological theory. In essence, I can be said to be conjecturing what Giddens proposed in his Consequences of Modernity. At the same time, however, I step outside the boundaries of Giddens' sociology by revising some of its basic assumptions, especially the notion of subjectivity. The specificity of my interpretation is the consistent historicization of modernity and, at the same time, of basic sociological concepts. Thus, I do not consider "society" or "actor" as ahistorical entities, but understand them as specifically modern forms. I emphasize Giddens' point about the unprecedented character of modernity and develop it with the thesis that modernity is intrinsically self-referential. I therefore interpret it as a religiosity of its own kind. The second part of the book includes chapters on the notion of structure, which I differentiate into two types corresponding to the two developmental phases of modernity. Next, I discuss the notion of system, which I divide into four subsystems according to Giddens' notion of institutional dimensions of modernity. In discussion with Foucault's work, I develop Giddens' notion of power, which I again differentiate into two types. In addition to power that manifests itself by constraining behaviour, I also define power that manifests itself by motivating action. On this basis, I also add to Giddens's notion of the power container. Giddens concretizes it in terms of the city and the nation-state, forms or institutions that are defined by their boundaries and by their ability to contain resources within those boundaries. In contrast to this, I introduce another type of power container that is characterized by the capacity to consume power rather than by its accumulation. This type serves to better understand the order of the current phase of modernity. In the conclusion of the book, I argue that the 2nd modernity is not just a decadent version of the previous modernity (e.g. Bauman), nor just its radicalisation, as Giddens thought. Rather, the current phase of modernity is characterized by a peculiar order and by a peculiar conception of subjectivity to which it relates and on which it relies. I try to describe this order with the help of Giddens's concepts and those introduced by myself in the book. The work concludes with a reflection on the place of science and theory in the wider spectrum of the possibilities of human knowledge.
