Coal mining in the Czech-Polish borderland is concentrated in the Ostrava-Karvina Coalfield, which forms the southwest part of the Upper Silesian hard coal basin. By the closure of mining companies and mining plants of underground mines, many changes inthe composition of surface constructions have occurred. Extensive remediation and reclamtion of devastated areas are aimed at ensuring the return of the landscape where environmental damane has occurred due to industrial activities to a useful purpose. At present, experience together with the phasing out of mining leads to remedying the effects of mining aktivity, which is controlled in advance and according to conditions of environmental protection. In the article, evident changes in the surface of closed underground mines and possible trends in the further use of reclaimed areas, constructions and equipment left empty after coal mining are stated. The artikle is supplemented by a numer of photographs documenting these changes.
