Ostrava Lagoons belong among the most polluted areas in the Czech Republic. According to the available information, about 200 000 t of sludge from the industrial processing of crude oil during the whole 20th century were disposed there. The sludge contains high levels of organic pollutants (PAHs, PCBs, C10 - C40 hydrocarbons), including toxic metals of anthropogenic origin (As, Cd, Cu, Hg, Ni and Pb). A number of autochthonous microorganisms were isolated from the lagoon sludge. This study focuses on the biodiversity of isolates of microscopic fungi, namely of the genera Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Aureobasidium and Rhizopus. New resistant isolates of microscopic filamentous fungi have adapted to high concentrations of pollutants both as for their phenotypes and genotypes. The highly toxic environment of the Ostrava Lagoons is an interesting locality to study the mechanisms of microorganisms´ adaptation to extreme stress conditions, which leads to better understanding of the genetic nature of tolerance towards toxic substances. New isolates of microscopic fungi can be applied in a number of bioremediation processes.
