During the second half of the 1990s most central and eastern Europe countries promoted and launched the institutional changes based mainly on the transformation of formerly planned economies into market economies. The main reason and aim was to improve the economic performance, gain the individual freedom and to implement the institution of private property which is widely regarded as a necessary prerequisite for efficient production, dynamic competition, structural change and innovatory strenght. Privatisation was one of most important institutional changes in these countries. The Czech Republic has experienced one of the quickest and most comprehensive privatization programme in the region and the long - term performance of its economy will depend substantially on the patterns of corporate control that have evolved since October 1991, the starting point of large-scale privatization.
