After the Cold War ended, present security situation in the world is different and requires different approaches to solve security problems of regional or global character. Present European Union wants to play on the world political and military scene more important role than in the past. Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) as integral instrument of the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP) should be improved both on the institutional level and in terms of the practical implementation too. That's why this article focuses on the gradual development of CSDP and especially on EU relations with other international bodies and partners, such as the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the USA.
