Reverse Auction as Purchasing Tool: Literature review and research agenda

Reverse auctions, widely used in both private and public sectors, have gained prominence due to global digitization. This surge has attracted attention from practitioners, experts, academics, and institutions, resulting in a fragmented knowledge base across disciplines. This study aims to organize and analyze this knowledge base by conducting a literature review spanning two decades, focusing on Web of Science and Scopus databases. Hundreds of articles covering various aspects of reverse auctions were examined, revealing a growing interest in three broad research areas: Computer Science, Engineering, and Business/Economics. Emphasizing business-oriented papers, we identify prevalent research methods such as analytical, mathematical, theoretical, and conceptual approaches, often utilizing experiments, simulations, and comparisons as data sources. Network and content analysis reveal four thematic clusters: Sustainability context, Decision-making support tools, Multi-attribute reverse auction design, and Insiders&apos; view. The study proposes five future research directions, highlighting abundant opportunities in the realm of reverse auctions.
