The Department of Foreign Languages of the Faculty ofMedicine and Dentistry at Palacky University in Olomouc focusesmainly on teaching undergraduate students of the Czech andEnglish programmes. Recently, its role has expanded to includemore significant support for PhD students and faculty staff, aswell as extra-curricular activities (practical tutorials on academictext production). However, we continue to find areas where theDepartment could help meet the needs of the ever-evolving Faculty,whether it is a wider range of languages taught, expandingthe time allocation of existing courses, or non-teaching activitiessuch as translation and proofreading of academic texts. Inthe text, these possibilities and their potential limits are criticallyevaluated.
