Le destin d'exilé met tout homme, et l'écrivain en particulier, a la fronti?re des langues : l'écrivain exilé est comme crucifié sur la croix de la langue maternelle (langue du passé, de l'enfance, des souvenirs) et de la langue du pays d'adoption (langue du présent et de la survie, pour certains peut-?tre du désir). C'est précisément sur cette expérience ? linguistique ? de l'écrivain en exil que porte cet article. ? l'exemple de Jan Čep (1902-1974), l'un des meilleurs écrivains tch?ques de l'entre-deux-guerres, l'article tâche de démontrer de quelle mani?re le déracinement causé par l'exil affecte l'existence de l'exilé en tant qu'homme et écrivain.

Writer in exile and his language: the case of Jan Čep

The case of the Czech writer Jan Čep represents a straightforward invitation to contemplate the way the exile experience may affect the relationship between the writer and his language - the instrument of artistic expression and the means of communication in general. In spite of his mastering the (at least reading) knowledge of several foreign languages, Čep cannot fight off linguistic extermination in the French exile. The ambivalence between his mother tongue (the language of the past and reminiscences) and the language of his foster homeland (the language of the present and survival) is reflected as a direct theme in his short stories written in the exile and it is so strong that it becomes one of the causes of the abiding silence of Jan Čep - the novelist.
