The paper is based on Čep's reviews written for the cultural broadcast program Book of the week that Čep prepared in exile for Radio Free Europe. Its main focus lies namely on Čep's reception of innovatives trends in French literature after the Second World War. The reviews of particular works falling close to the French Nouveau roman (La Modification by Michel Butor, Le Dîner en ville by Claude Mauriac or Moderato Cantabile by Marguerite Duras) imply Čep's ambivalent attitude to these innovative trends. He admits the legitimity or even the need to search for new methods and the formal courage of the Nouveau roman representatives but at the same time he refuses their theoretical axioms (such as the absence of psychology, absolute detachment and non-alignment) perceiving them as illusory and too scholastic for the genre of novel.
