Ignatius Sichelbarth (1708 - 1780), a missionary and court painter in Beijing, arrived there in 1745 to assist Castiglione whose progress was separated from art in Europe (Italy). Sichelbarth continued his mode, and despite a lesser artistic capability,was granted comparable honors by the emperor. Recently, some hitherto unknown documents from the period preceding Sichelbarth 's arrival to Beijing came to light. Nevertheless, his personal history remains considerably obscure, and no letters by him survive. The article reiterates Sichelbarth's oeuvre, divides it into groups based on genre, and relates it to its historic background. In conclusion, some questions concerning the relation of art and emperor, and art and state in the eighteenth century China are raised.
