Der Beitrag bietet eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit einigen Interpretationen früher deutscher Interpunktionslehren (vom 15. bis zum 17. Jahrhundert). Es wird demonstriert, dass in der bisherigen Forschung der Einfluss der klassischen Rhetorik (insbesondere der Comma-Colon-Periodus-Lehre) nicht hinreichend berücksichtigt wurde und dass hieraus methodologische Probleme resultieren. Im Anschluss daran wird eine auf die traditionell-rhetorische 'Syntax' gestützte Neuinterpretation der älteren Interpunktionslehren skizziert.

This article offers a critical discussion of some approaches to the interpretation of early theories of punctuation in German (from the 15th to the 17th century). It is shown that even the more recent contributions to this subject have not properly reflected the importance of the influence from classical rhetoric (especially the conception of 'rhetorical-syntactical analysis' by means of comma, colon, period). This leads to methodological problems. Therefore, this article sketches a new interpretation of the early German theories of punctuation within the traditional framework of 'rhetoric syntax'.
