The objective of this study is an analysis of historical changes of selected visual research tools used by anthropologists during fieldwork. Special attention will be devoted to the photography and drawings as the gnoseological tool in anthropology. Theauthor will describe the differences in purpose and in practical usage of photography and drawings in anthropological research. The author will also explain why anthropologists have generally understood photography as the evidence and the record of the ethnographic reality, while drawings were used as a projective tool that enabled us to record native perspective in different ways. The author builds on ideas developed by leading anthropologists such as Taussig or Pinney. The aim of this study is to provide a comparative overview of the historical changes of the position of photography and drawing and their mutual relationships in anthropology.
