Poverty in Old Age in the Czech Republic from the Perspective of Helping Professions
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This chapter presents the outcomes of qualitative research which sought insight into everyday experience of helping professionals who work with the poor elderly resp. the homeless elderly. There were two main research questions: How the helping professionals "define" (1) old age in relation to poverty (and vice versa poverty to old age); (2) essence, possibilities and limits of social assistance for this target group. The conclusions are based on the analysis of the data from in-depth interviews with professionals on various positions of the management of the social services for the homeless people. The conclusions show that the extremely poor old homeless people represent the "invisible" part of the clients' group for the helping professionals and that is not only because of their small number. They emphasize that they do not make a difference between the clients: they declare their primarily concentration on solving the homelessness with no special regard on the clients' age. Despite this, in their narratives the age/old age gains many meanings which they prescribe to their clients in various significant contexts.
