Changes of Aims of the Czech Compulsory School Education

All the levels of education that contributes to the development of intellectual capital have changed in the Czech Republic in the last 25 years. This paper focuses on the issue of schools providing compulsory education with the aim to identify how the school management perceives (the change of) functions of schools. The theoretical framework of this paper is the transformation of the curriculum of schools providing compulsory education and the sociological and pedagogical approaches to defining functions (roles, goals) of schools or education. The data were collected by means of a questionnaire for school heads in two regions of the Czech Republic (n=165). The questionnaire is focused on three functions in particular: professionalization, socialization integration and ecological function. On the basis of statistical data treatment, the theoretical model of these functions can be partially supported by the factor analysis as it has fully confirmed the existence of professionalization and ecological function. However, the socialization integration function has been divided into two: socialization and integration. The assessment of the current status of functions of school is proved to be statistically dependent on the ideal concept of functions of schools.
