Des cadeaux de prestige à la production sur place: les manuscrits liturgiques enluminés en Europe centrale à l’époque romane.

En raison du nombre relativement faible de réalisations architecturales conservées pour cette période, les manuscrits enluminés, et notamment les manuscrits liturgiques, constituent un témoignage important de l’art roman en Europe Centrale; certains d’entre eux sont d’ailleurs de véritables trésors, non seulement pour la région, mais aussi à l’échelle continentale. Si les plus anciens d’entre eux proviennent des pays d’Empire, on voit également apparaître une production locale surtout à partir du XIIème siècle. Bien que les influences extérieures demeurent prépondérantes (modèles, sources, artistes), plusieurs réalisations sont d’un très grand intérêt, comme par exemple les manuscrits de l’atelier d’Olomouc, (qui proposent une représentation très vivante des conditions de travail des enlumineurs), le Codex Pray, d’une valeur inestimable pour la médiévistique hongroise ou encore le Codex Gigas, un exemple particulièrement impressionnant de « Bible Géante » provenant de Bohème.

Because of the relatively weak number of architectural works preserved for this period, illuminated manuscripts, and specially the liturgical ones, constitute an important trace of Romanesque art in Central Europe; some of them are indeed real treasures, not only for the region, but also on the continental scale. Even though the oldest manuscripts come from the Holy Roman Empire, a local production also began to flourish in the region, chiefly in the XIIth century. In spite of the persistence of foreign influences (models, sources, artists), some works are of great interest, such as the manuscripts of Olomouc’s workshop (which countain a very colourful representation of the artists’ working conditions), the Pray Codex, which is absolutely priceless for Hungarian medievistics, or the Codex Gigas, a very impressive exemple of « Giant Bible » from Bohemia.
