The chapter examines the process of standardizing Dutch, with a focus on Latinization in the Renaissance. The research also investigates the attempts to make written and spoken Dutch converge since the end of the old regime (1795). As there exist long-time differences between the way Dutch is spoken in Holland around Amsterdam and in Flanders around Antwerp, these variations of the language have gradually achieved the status of two separate standards. Apart from this, peripheral regions of Dutch-speaking countries have recently started to cultivate their own local dialects. These issues constitute an important part of an ongoing academic discussion concerning the extent to which it is possible to unify the Dutch language.
