De gebruikelijke multidisciplinaire benadering van kunstenaars in de Nederlandse literatuur maakt het de moeite waard om de relatie tussen beeldende kunst en literatuur te onderzoeken, die twee verschillende disciplines zijn. De positie van de auteur of de personages tussen de twee disciplines is moeilijk te bepalen, omdat elk discipline zijn eigen kenmerken heeft. Om het fenomeen van een multidisciplinaire kunstenaar te begrijpen, probeert de bijdrage op basis van Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Martin Heidegger en Maurice Merleau-Ponty, de relatie tussen de beeldende kunst en literatuur te begrijpen door de twee disciplines in relatie tot elkaar te analyseren. Volgens Maurice Merleau-Ponty is 'Zien' een fenomeen dat de disciplines gemeen hebben. In de volgende analyse wordt Merleau-Ponty's concept van 'Zien' geconfronteerd met een poging om te bepalen of het bruikbaar is in relatie tot multidisciplinaire kunstenaars.

The common multi-disciplinary approach to artists in Dutch literature makes it worth investigating the relationship between visual art and literature, these being two different disciplines. The position of the author or the characters between the two disciplines is difficult to determine, because each discipline has its own characteristics. To understand the phenomenon of a multi-disciplinary artist, the paper attempts, on the basis of Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, Martin Heidegger and Maurice Merleau-Ponty, to understand the relationship between the visual arts and literature, analyzing the two disciplines in relationship to each other. According to Maurice Merleau-Ponty, ‘Seeing’ is a phenomenon which the disciplines have in common. In the following analysis, Merleau-Ponty's concept of ‘Seeing’ is confronted with an attempt to determine whether it is usable in relationship to multi-disciplinary artists.
