Finding the way at Kraków Główny railway station: Directional signs solving confusion in eye tracker study

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

A wearable eye tracker was utilised to evaluate the directional signs that were used by 25 young test participants from three countries to find their way at the station hall of Kraków Główny railway station. The station hall was a place, where apparently inadequate signage caused significant confusion and was described by the test participants as resembling a maze. The directional signs immediately upon entering the area were found to be hidden from the view of incoming passengers who were faced with two alternate routes; most of the test participants appeared to be using the movement of other people rather than directional signs to proceed. Upon entering the station hall itself, the test participants seemed to be overwhelmed by a plethora of signs, including those pointing to the same place (ticket counters, which were the wayfinding task checkpoint) in two different directions. As such, they were again faced with a choice, which caused their confusion. Only the third most frequently signs in the station hall area were directing toward the ticket counters. It is shown that both inappropriate location of the directional signs and their excess are major reasons for difficulty of the wayfinding. The results of this experiment indicate signage and/or signage location unable to accommodate the needs of travellers from around the world who visit Kraków, the key tourist destination in Poland.
