In dit artikel wordt ingegaan op de verschillende rollen die sociaal tolken spelen in de context van vertolkte interacties, of beter gezegd hoe deze rollen worden ervaren. Het feit dat tolken fungeren als bemiddelaars bij uitspraken van de ene taal naar de andere (en vice versa) blijkt uit de aard van het tolkproces zelf. Vele studies van hedendaagse onderzoekers op dit gebied tonen echter aan dat de rol van de sociaal tolk duidelijk verschilt van die van de conferentietolk; de rol van de sociaal tolk gaat in de ogen van verschillende auteurs verder dan louter talige bemiddeling van noodzakelijke informatie, en de tolk wordt vaak zelfs verantwoordelijk geacht voor de coördinatie van een gesprek tussen deelnemers aan vertolkte communicatie: de sociaal tolk bepaalt wie spreekt en wie luistert; legt aan de deelnemers uit wat de andere partij bedoelt; signaleert dit; en legt uit waarom een bepaalde vertolkte communicatie door een van de partijen niet werd begrepen. De specifieke culturele positie van de tolk kan soms zelfs een reden zijn waarom de tolk “zijn bemiddelende rol verlaat”. Tolken opereren altijd tussen twee werelden die verschillend zijn op verschillende niveaus en die de tolk exact moet verbinden door middel van taaloverdracht van de communicatie. Bij sociaal tolken hebben we vaak te maken met opvallende verschillen in normen en waarden. Moet de tolk de deelnemers informeren over de interactie tussen deze verschillen of niet? Gaat hij niet te ver als hij actief ingrijpt in conflictsituaties in een vertolkte dialoog, omdat de andere deelnemer niet beschikt over de benodigde kennis van culturele tradities en gebruiken van de andere partij? Mogen we van de tolk verwachten dat hij zijn cliënt, die de taal van het betreffende land niet spreekt, op de hoogte stelt van zijn rechten zodra hij merkt dat de andere partij deze niet respecteert? Het artikel bespreekt verschillende inzichten in de rol van sociaal tolken. We gaan uit van de hypothese dat de voorstelling van de rol van de sociaal tolk niet alleen sterk afhankelijk zal zijn van verschillende conceptuele opvattingen van individuele auteurs, maar ook verschillend verankerd zal zijn in verschillende landen en culturen.

In this article, the question of different roles that community interpreters play in the context of in- terpreted interactions is addressed, or rather how these roles are perceived. The fact that interpreters function as mediators of pronouncements from one language to another (and vice versa) is apparent from the nature of the interpretation process itself. However, frequent studies by contemporary researchers in this field show that the role of community interpreter is clearly different from that of conference interpreter; the role of the community interpreter, as seen by several authors, often goes beyond the mediation of the language transfer of necessary information, and the interpreter is often even considered responsible for the coordination of a particular conversation between participants of interpreted communication: the community interpreter determines who is speaking and who is listening; explains to the participants what the other party mean; signals this; and explains why a certain interpreted communication was not understood by one of the parties. The specific cultural position of the interpreter can sometimes also be the reason why the interpreter “leaves his mediating role”. Interpreters always operate between two worlds which are different at different levels and which it is precisely the interpreter&apos;s job to connect through language transfer of communications. In the case of community interpreters, we often have to deal with striking differences in norms and values. Does the interpreter have to inform the participants of the interaction about these differences or not? Doesn&apos;t he go too far if he actively intervenes in conflict situations in an interpreted dialogue, because the other participant doesn&apos;t have the necessary knowledge about the cultural traditions and customs of the other party? Can we expect the interpreter to inform his client, who does not speak the language of the country in question, of his rights as soon as he notices that the other party does not respect them? The article discusses various insights into the role played by community interpreters. We start from the hypothesis that the preception of the role of the community interpreter will be higly dependent not only on different conceptual representations of individual authors but will also be differently anchored in different countries and cultures.
