Le Baiser au lépreux de François Mauriac et O Veleiro de Cristal (français « Le Voilier de Cristal ») de José Mauro de Vasconcelos s’adressent a priori à deux publics différents, Le Baiser au lépreux étant généralement considéré comme le premier livre important de Mauriac, alors que O Veleiro de Cristal appartient à la « littérature jeunesse », à l’instar de O Meu Pé de Laranja Lima (français « Mon bel oranger ») du même auteur, qui connut au Brésil, mais aussi en France, un très grand succès. Les deux récits présentent toutefois de profonds points communs qui nous incitent à les rapprocher ici. Au niveau narratif, tous deux racontent l’histoire d’un être qui souffre de son apparence physique, Jean Péloueyre dans Le Baiser au lépreux et Eduardo dans O Veleiro de Cristal, qui sont rejetés par leur entourage et se cachent des autres. Ils essayent de s’évader de leur expérience douloureuse, par la religion pour Jean Péloueyre, même si celle-ci fait l’objet d’un drame existentiel, et par l’imagination pour Eduardo, qui découvre dans la maison où l’a amenée sa tante Anna des animaux qui parlent. Dans les deux récits, enfin, le thème de la charité est fondamental : chez Mauriac, Noémi épouse Jean et finit par l’aimer d’un amour fondé sur la charité et que l’on peut définir comme agapè, alors que, dans O Veleiro de Cristal, Anna renonce à toute forme de vanité mondaine pour se consacrer à son neveu, charité à laquelle fait écho celle des animaux qui peuplent le Voilier de Cristal.

Le Baiser au lépreux (English “The Kiss to the Leper”), by François Mauriac, and O Veleiro de Cristal (English “The Crystal Sailboat”), by José Mauro de Vasconcelos, are a priori aimed at two different audiences. Le Baiser au lépreux is indeed generally considered as Mauriac’s first important book, whereas O Veleiro de Cristal belongs to “children’s literature”, like O Meu Pé de Laranja Lima (English “My Sweet Orange Tree”), by the same author, which was very successful in Brazil but also in France. The two stories share however deep similarities, what incites us to establish a parallel between them. As far as the narrative level is concerned, both of the books tell the story of a human being who suffers from his physical appearance, Jean Péloueyre in Le Baiser au lépreux and Eduardo in O Veleiro de Cristal, who are rejected by their close relatives and hide from the others. They try to escape from their painful experience, thanks to the religion in the case of Jean Péloueyre, even if the latter gives rise to an existential drama, and thanks to the imagination in the case of Eduardo, who discovers in the house where his aunt Anna has led him animals who are able to talk. In both stories, eventually, the theme of charity is fundamental: in Mauriac’s novel, Noémi marries Jean and ends up loving him of a love based on charity and that can be defined as agapè, while in O Veleiro de Cristal Anna renounces all vanity to be devoted to her nephew, her charity echoing the one of the animals who live in the Crystal Sailboat.
