Errance et incomplétude dans l’œuvre de Jan Čep

Cet article se penche sur le thème de l’errance et de l’incomplétude dans l’œuvre de l’écrivain tchèque Jan Čep (1902-1974). Errance et incomplétude constituent les deux faces d’une même thématique qui s’incarne à un quadruple niveau : spatial, temporel, métaphysique et humain. Le personnage čepien se présente ainsi souvent comme un errant, à la fois incapable de s’enraciner quelque part et en même temps nostalgique d’un foyer natal. En outre, il ne parvient pas à réaliser sa vocation et laisse s’échapper le temps dans lequel il erre. Du point de vue métaphysique, on note chez Čep l’angoisse devant l’idée d’infini, auquel il oppose fréquemment la notion de limitation et de clôture, que l’on retrouve par exemple dans le motif du jardin. Enfin, l’un des moyens de dépasser cette angoisse ainsi que celle qui surgit devant le sentiment d’incomplétude de sa propre vie est l’amour-charité, que les personnages parviennent parfois à étendre à l’ensemble de l’humanité.

This article focuses on the themes of wandering and incompleteness in the work of the Czech writer Jan Čep (1902-1974). Wandering and incompleteness represent the two aspects of a same thematics and are reflected at four levels: spatial, temporal, metaphysical and human. The Čepian character looks like rootless, incapable of being attached to some place and at the same time nostalgic of a native home. Furthermore, he doesn’t manage to achieve his vocation and lets fleeing the time in which he wanders. From a metaphysical viewpoint, one can observe in Čep the anxiety in front of the idea of infinite, to which Čep often opposes the notion of limitation and fence, for example present in the motif of the garden. Eventually, the way to go over this anxiety and the one which emerges from the feeling of life’s incompleteness can be found in the love-charity, that the characters sometimes manage to extend to the whole humanity.
