Teaching the pragmatics of humour to L2 learners via sitcoms
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Pragmatic competence is an important level of language acquisition. How can sitcoms be used in L2 classes to teach pragmatic competence? The present paper proposes teaching pragmatic competence to L2 learners with the use of conversations from the popular American sitcom The Big Bang Theory. More specifically, it focuses on the humorous aspects of the sitcom and explains the humorous potential of the jokes via crucial terms from one of the most influential pragmatic humorous theories - The General Theory of Verbal Humor. Throughout the conversations, it exemplifies the use of sarcasm, irony, lying, or figurative language which lead to humorous utterances, and thus provides material for L2 classes. The paper proposes how L2 learners should acquire better pragmatic competence as well as develop culture-specific humor understanding.
