Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper analyses the use and potential deletion of a glottal stop in pronunciation of 37 professional Czech speakers in TV news broadcasting. Although the glottal stop is not usually included in the research on public speaking, some recent studies have pointed out to its importance in speech quality assessment. Following the rules of standard Czech pronunciation, the glottal stop must be used only after non-vocalized prepositions k, v, z, s, but it is recommended to maintain it in all prevocalic positions for clear and comprehensible pronunciation. The present analysis studies frequencies of a glottal stop deletion in TV presenters’ speaking. The aim of the analysis is to show whether these speakers tend to delete glottal stops in specific phonological contexts (e.g., in lexical words, after non-vocalized prepositions, after prefixes, before conjunctions, etc.), or whether the deletions are random. Furthermore, this data is interpreted to contrast speech quality of the individual presenters regarding their gender, a TV channel, and a programme type. The findings make part of long-term research in the use of the glottal stop by both professional and general speakers of the Czech language.
