Als Orte der literarischen Moderne gelten meistens die Großstädte Paris, Berlin oder Wien. Das vorliegende Buch zeigt, dass auch abseits der Metropolen bedeutender Literaturbetrieb herrschte. Das Buch befasst sich mit der Mährischen Moderne, einem Phänomen, das um 1900 in der östlichen Hälfte Böhmischer Länder durch eine lose Autorengruppierung repräsentiert wird. Die literarischen Texte greifen zwar Formen der nahestehenden Wiener Moderne auf, sind jedoch durch ihre Themen und Erzählmittel unter den Einfluss des deutschen Naturalismus einzuordnen. Das Buch präsentiert neben ästhetischen und erzähltechnischen Verschränkungen der Texte zwei Schwerpunkte der Mährischen Moderne: Bilder krisenhafter Familien und den deutsch-tschechischen Konflikt in der mährischen Hauptstadt Brünn.

The major cities of Paris, Berlin or Vienna are usually regarded as places of literary modernism. This book shows that there was also significant literary activity outside the metropolises. The book deals with Moravian Modernism, a phenomenon represented by a loose group of authors in the eastern half of the Bohemian Lands around 1900. Although the literary texts take up forms of the close Viennese modernism, they can be classified under the influence of German naturalism through their themes and narrative devices. In addition to the aesthetic and narrative entanglements of the texts, the book presents two key aspects of Moravian Modernism: images of families in crisis and the German-Czech conflict in the Moravian capital Brno.
