«Comprendete e osservate la Regola senza alcuna interpretazione, puramente e in semplicità». Con queste parole Francesco d’Assisi, ormai malato e prossimo alla morte, intimava i suoi frati a non commentare la Regola evangelica che Dio gli aveva donato e che lui aveva voluto come norma fondamentale per il suo Ordine.Solo pochi anni dopo, tuttavia, i suoi seguaci, appoggiandosi sull&apos;autorità papale, si lanciarono in un’intensa riflessione sulla Regola che commentarono, glossarono, chiarirono utilizzando in maniera originale l’armamentario esegetico che avevano conosciuto durante i loro studi.Perché i frati andarono contro la volontà di Francesco? Quale fu la vera posta in gioco nell&apos;interpretare la Regola? Perché nel corso di tre secoli i Minori scrissero un numero di commenti che non ha confronto rispetto agli altri Ordini religiosi?Attraverso l’indagine dei testi e dei loro autori, delle vicende della loro diffusione, del pubblico a cui si rivolsero e delle finalità con cui furono scritti, il libro prova a rispondere a queste fondamentali domande.

With these words Francis of Assisi, by now sick and close to death, instructed his brothers not to comment on the Rule of the Gospel that God had given him and that he had wanted as a fundamental norm for his Order.Only a few years later, however, his followers, relying on the papal authority, embarked on an intense reflection on the Rule, which they commented on, glossed, and clarified, using in an original manner the exegetical paraphernalia they had encountered during their studies.Why did the friars go against Francis&apos; will? What was really at stake in interpreting the Rule? Why in the course of three centuries the Minors wrote a number of commentaries that has no comparison with other religious orders?Through the investigation of the texts and their authors, the events of their dissemination, the audience to which they were addressed and the purposes for which they were written, the book attempts to answer these fundamental questions.
