Článek pojednává o dialektu v prefektuře Kumamoto na ostrově Kjúšú. Definuje geografické a historické činitele, které pomáhaly utvářet současnou podobumístního nářečí, a vysvětluje, proč se na jihu prefektury mluví jinak než na severu. Zároveň seznamuje čtenáře s nejvýznamnější rysy tohoto dialektu z fonologického,morfosyntaktického, lexikálního a zdvořilostního hlediska. Nakonec se pokouší vysvětlit, proč je tento dialekt v současnosti populární a proč by měl být chápán jakonejtypičtější zástupce dialektů na Kjúšú.

This article is focused on dialect in the prefecture of Kumamoto. Along with otherKyushu dialects, it is quite popular in the whole Japan, based on the recent surveys,and it is often used in the everyday life of Kumamoto’s inhabitants. If we want to say,why is this dialect so popular, we may consider these factors. Firstly, all of the Westernand Kyushu dialects are considered more charming than the Eastern ones. Secondly,Kyushu is quite distant from the central area of Japan, so local dialects can be difficultto understand for standard Japanese speakers but still mutually intelligible. Becauseof that, they can be viewed as more exotic but still homely. These factors apply to morethan just Kumamoto dialect, but it is the base of the positive attitude of not local in-habitants. So why is this dialect so important? I believe that this dialect can be used as a lingua franca for the whole island of Kyushu. Because of geographic and historical influence, it was shaped by northern’s Hichiku dialects (mostly by the Hakata dialect) and southern’s Sacugu dialect (mostly by the Kagoshima dialect), there can be also seen a small influence of Hyuga dialects. Because of this, most of the vernacular traits of Kyushu dialects are spotted in Kumamoto dialect and it gently combines all of them. Therefore, it should be easily intelligible anywhere in Kyushu.
