O objetivo deste artigo é analisar a representação da personagem de prostitutano romance de Mário de Andrade, Amar, Verbo Intransitivo (1927), uma das principaisobras do modernismo brasileiro. A questão central que consideramos é se o autorabraçou os estereótipos profundamente enraizados e ligados a este tipo de profissão ou seatribuiu novas características à prostituta de acordo com a estética eideologia dele. O ambiente de trabalho atípico e a origem alemã da prostitutaabre uma série de vários papéis da personagem no romance. Estes incluem: iniciar sexualmente ocliente, educar os filhos da família, cuidar da casa e ilustrarcrítica à burguesia. Por outro lado, a personagem exposta ao narrador pirandeliano representa a manifestação máxima do Expressionismo no romance.

he purpose of this article is to analyse the depiction of the character of a prostitutein the novel by Mário de Andrade, Amar, Verbo Intransitivo (1927), one of the mainworks of Brazilian modernism. The central question that we consider is if the authorembraced the deep-rooted stereotypes connected to this type of profession or ifhe attributed new characteristics to the prostitute according to his aesthetic andideology. The atypical working environment and German origin of the prostituteopen an array of her various roles in the novel. These include: sexually initiate theclient, educate the children in the family, take care of the household and illustratecriticism of bourgeoisie. On the other hand, the character exposed to the Pirandellian narrator represents the maximal manifestation of Expressionism in the novel.
