The Russia – Ukraine War on Czech screens: Television coverage and audience responses
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The Czech Republic is one of Ukraine’s strongest supporters in its fight against the Russian invasion. Czech-Russian relations are a hot and sensitive topic in public discourse, and the outbreak of open military conflict in Ukraine has crowded out much of the Czech media agenda. This chapter analyses both the Czech television coverage of the war in Ukraine and the audience responses. In interpreting the results, the chapter refers to orientation theory, the premises of the cross-media exposure approach, and second-level agenda setting. The findings show that the news agenda and the framing were very similar across public and private channels. Audiences were horrified by the news but rated it as timely and understandable. They did not agree on the extent of the objectivity of the news. Viewers of commercial television tended to declare a loss of trust in mainstream media, both public and private, and made efforts to search for alternative sources of information.
