Dans le présent chapitre nous étudions l&apos;évolution de la signification du « silence » depuis les nouvelles juvéniles de l’écrivain spiritualiste tchèque Jan Čep (1902-1974) jusqu’aux écrits tardifs de cet écrivain exilé, dont l’œuvre elle-même se trouve couverte d’une double couche de silence, celui imposé par le régime totalitaire dans sa patrie et celui provenant du refus des structures éditoriales du pays d’adoption. Si, à partir de son exil en France, l’écrivain tchèque « passe sous silence » (selon Galmiche) et se tait en tant que prosateur, ce n’est que pour mieux soulever sa voix pour rapeler dans ses émissions pour Radio Europe libre un autre silence, celui des victimes souffrant dans les prisons communistes.

In this chapter we examine the evolution of the meaning of ‘silence’ from the juvenile short stories of the Czech spiritualist writer Jan Čep (1902-1974) to the later writings of this exiled writer, whose work itself is covered by a double layer of silence, that imposed by the totalitarian regime in his homeland and that resulting from the rejection of the editorial structures of his adopted country. If, from his exile in France, the Czech writer ‘passes under silence’ (Galmiche) and remains silent as a prose writer, it is only to raise his voice all the more to recall in his broadcasts for Radio Europe Libre another silence, that of the victims suffering in Communist prisons.
