This paper addresses the issue of converting proper names between writing systems whose minimal graphic units correspond to different sound units, such as borrowing from the Czech language into Chinese. The graphemes of the former correspond to phonemes, while the writing system of the latter operates on the level of syllables. Once recorded by sinograms, the original Czech syllables are inevitably assimilated into Chinese sound categories. The paper evaluates the feature of (in)correctness from the perspective of the uniformity and effectiveness of the mapping system.
