Il cinema di Paolo e Vittorio Taviani ha sempre stabilito con la letteratura un rapporto critico e creativo, in cui l’adattamento non è mai semplice trasposizione, ma interpretazione, dialogo, riscrittura. Il volume indaga il cuore di tale relazione: gli incontri dei Taviani con Tolstoj e Pirandello, i loro autori più amati, accomunati da una radicale interrogazione sull’identità, sul nesso tra individuo e storia. Attraverso l’analisi di sei film emblematici (San Michele aveva un gallo, Kaos, Il sole anche di notte, Tu ridi, Resurrezione, Leonora addio), si mettono in rilievo le modalità di un confronto appassionato e intenso con la dimensione tematica e formale dei testi letterari adattati, sempre ricostruita in progetti originali e intimamente vissuti. Lo spessore autoriale del cinema dei Taviani emerge così in tutta la sua ricchezza: la letteratura non è percepita come un linguaggio concorrente, ma come materia viva, da reinventare nel segno di una nuova visione poetica e politica.

The cinema of Paolo and Vittorio Taviani has always established with literature a critical and creative relationship, in which adaptation is never a mere transposition but rather an interpretation, a dialogue, a rewriting. This volume investigates the core of such a relationship: the Tavianis’ encounters with Tolstoy and Pirandello, their most beloved authors, united by a radical questioning of identity and of the connection between the individual and history. Through the analysis of six emblematic films (San Michele aveva un gallo, Kaos, Il sole anche di notte, Tu ridi, Resurrezione, Leonora addio), the study highlights the modes of a passionate and intense engagement with the thematic and formal dimensions of the adapted literary texts, which are always reconfigured into original and deeply personal projects. The authorial depth of the Tavianis’ cinema thus emerges in all its richness: literature is not perceived as a competing language but as a living substance, to be reinvented in the name of a new poetic and political vision.
