Politics on the Map: Naming Places in the Spirit of Solidarity

This article examines how place-naming can serve as a form of political solidarity in urban spaces, using two recent examples: the designation of “Palæstinas Plads” in Copenhagen and the renaming of several locations around the Russian Embassy in Prague. The authors trace the deliberations and debates behind these naming decisions and show how they reflect broader socio-political dynamics: the Danish case foregrounds inclusion, diversity and a public gesture of solidarity with Palestinians, while the Czech example frames resistance, memory, and symbolic alignment with those opposing Russian authoritarianism. In both cases, the act of naming is not simply commemorative but actively engages with international conflicts and local identity politics. Ultimately, while recognising that street names cannot change global power structures, the article argues that they contribute to public awareness and signal political values in everyday geography.
