"Meyn fater izt a yud": An Edition of Fragments of Jewish Folklore
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
This article provides an edition, transcription, contextual overview and basic analysis of two previously unknown manuscript fragments of Jewish folklore from the Luže synagogue genizah in eastern Bohemia, which date from the first half of the nineteenth century. These manuscripts comprise a collection of folk and semifolk songs in JudeoGerman, and to a lesser extent in Czech, all written in Hebrew script. They provide a unique insight into the linguistic practices and cultural creativity of the Jewish community in rural Bohemia. The documented lyrics are characterized by their thematic diversity, including satirical and erotic ditties, drinking and military songs, and selfironic texts. Of particular interest are the ditties about Eyzak Leyb, the archetypal “schle miel” – an inept, bungling mock hero in Yiddish literature. In terms of form, the song lyrics reflect the folk and urban song culture of the period, making use of diverse rhyming structures and forms of wordplay. The manuscript edition demonstrates not only a significant level of folkloric adaptation and transcultur al exchange, but also, and more importantly, the existence of a previously over looked collecting activity that may be connected to the Gubernial Collection of Folk Songs (1819). The findings from the Luže genizah are a unique resource for understanding the cultural dynamics of Bohemian Jews, substantially expanding the scope of Jewish folklore research, which has traditionally focused on Eastern European Yiddish materials.
