Zofen gehören zur etablierten Personenkonstellation mittelalterlicher höfischer Epik und erfreuen sich auch jenseits höfischer Literatur großer Beliebtheit. Sie agieren als Vertraute exponierter Damen, sie bewegen sich zwischen dem öffentlichen Raum (Hof) und der privaten Sphäre der Dame (Kemenate) und stehen mit Rat und Tat zur Verfügung. Dabei besteht ihr wichtigster Auftrag darin, die Ehre der Herrin zu schützen. In einer fiktiven Romanwelt, welche von labilen Helden und affektgeladenen Damen geprägt ist, erscheinen Zofen als vergleichsweise stabile Figuren, die meist Sympathie des Publikums gewinnen. Das Kapitel analysiert zwei Beispiele in Bezug auf die Frage, inwieweit, evtl. wie Sympathie durch den Text erzeugt und gesteuert wird. Die Folie bilden Auszüge aus dem Tristan-Roman Gottfrieds von Straßburg, in denen Brangäne eine zentrale Rolle spielt und die relevanten Passagen in der Kurzerzählung des(Pseudo)Konrads Die halbe Birne, in denen Irmengard als Beraterin der Dame agiert.

Ladies-in-waiting (Zofen) belong to the established constellation of characters in medieval courtly romance and also enjoy great popularity beyond courtly literature. They act as confidantes to prominent noblewomen, moving between the public sphere (the court) and the lady’s private quarters (the chamber), and they provide counsel and practical assistance. Their primary duty is to protect their mistress’s honor.Within a fictional romance world shaped by unstable heroes and emotionally driven ladies, the ladies-in-waiting appear as comparatively stable figures who usually win the audience’s sympathy.This chapter analyzes two examples with regard to the question of to what extent—and possibly by what means—sympathy is generated and directed by the text. The analysis draws on selected passages from Tristan by Gottfried von Straßburg, in which Brangäne plays a central role, as well as the relevant sections of the short narrative Die halbe Birne by (Pseudo-)Konrad, in which Irmengard acts as the lady’s advisor.
