Die Einleitung skizziert die historische und ästhetische Breite der Dienerfigur und zeigt, wie unterschiedlich Rollen, Semantiken und Machtkonstellationen in literarischen Kontexten ausgeformt werden. Der Band versammelt Beiträge vom Mittelalter bis ins 20. Jahrhundert und arbeitet heraus, wie Diener- und Dienerinnenfiguren narrative Funktionen übernehmen, Wertordnungen verschieben und soziale Hierarchien spiegeln. Mittelalterliche Texte rücken weibliche Dienstrollen als aktive, normverschiebende Akteurinnen ins Zentrum, während frühneuzeitliche und barocke Beispiele satirische, groteske oder repertoirebildende Funktionen der Dienerfigur betonen. Weitere Kapitel analysieren höflichkeitspragmatische Muster, pädagogische Modellierungen, die ambivalente Teufelsgestalt, jiddische Dramaturgie und populärliterarische Modernitätsdiagnosen. Auch Zukunftsromane und dokumentarische Dramen zeigen, wie das Motiv des Dienens zur Reflexion gesellschaftlicher Strukturen genutzt wird. The introduction outlines the historical and aesthetic range of the servant figure and shows how differently roles, semantics, and power constellations are shaped across literary contexts. The volume brings together contributions from the Middle Ages to the twentieth century and demonstrates how servant figures—male and female—assume narrative functions, shift value systems, and mirror social hierarchies. Medieval texts foreground female service roles as active agents capable of altering norms, while early modern and Baroque examples emphasize satirical, grotesque, or repertoire-forming aspects of the servant figure. Further chapters analyse pragmatics of politeness, pedagogical modelling, the ambivalent devil figure, Yiddish dramaturgy, and popular-literary diagnoses of modernity. Utopian and documentary dramas likewise show how the motif of service is used to reflect social structures. The result is a multifaceted panorama of the servant figure as an indicator of social dynamics, narrative innovation, and cultural self-representation.
