The impacts of the political coup of 1918 on the Roman Catholic Church during the First Czechoslovak Republic
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The relationship between the Catholic Church and the state went through various moments of crisis (celebrations of Jan Hus or the Marmaggi affair). However, the relationship strengthened so much that the state was able to conclude a Modus vivendi agreement (1928) with the Holy See. Fears about the strict separation of the church from the state did not come true, the state gradually became more conciliatory towards the church. In the same way, it was not a big problem for the church to cope with the existence of a new state establishment, criticism of the position of the church within the monarchy, while national consciousness appeared among the clergy already before 1918. The issue of appointed bishops was also sensitive. The modus vivendi set a number of conditions and obligations for the church so that its activities would not harm the interests of the state, yet it was also an explicit recognition of the existence of church institutions and their freedom of action. Almost a fifth of Catholics left the Catholic Church during the first decade of the Czechoslovak Republic. Most of them, however, did not join either the Czechoslovak or any other church, and remained without a confession.
