    Bambara groundnut [Vigna subterranea (L.) Verdc] is an underutilized African legume crop. It is cultivated mainly by resource-poor farmers using unimproved cultivars. There is little information on the treatments that improve seed germination and seedling vigour of Bambara groundnut. Smoke-water (SW) and bioactive smoke compound Karrikinolide (KAR&lt;inf&gt;1&lt;/inf&gt;) have shown promising results in producing better quality seedlings in several agricultural and horticultural crops. In this study, three different concentrations of SW and KAR&lt;inf&gt;1&lt;/inf&gt; were tested for enhancing germination and seedling growth (plumule and radicle) of different colour (brown, cream, red and red-speckled) seeds of Bambara groundnut. Smoke-water at 1:1500 v/v and KAR&lt;inf&gt;1&lt;/inf&gt; at 10&lt;sup&gt;-6&lt;/sup&gt; M were effective in augmenting percentage germination and plumule and radicle lengths with reduced mean germination time. Alpha-amylase activity and carbohydrate and proline levels were decreased with increased protein levels by SW (1:1500 v/v) treatment in 14-day-old seedlings grown from brown, cream and red coloured seeds. These physiological changes, after SW treatment, resulted in longer plumule and radicle lengths. Analysis of variance results indicated that treatment and seed colour are important factors that need consideration for future studies. This study highlights the importance of implementing alternative agricultural practices to improve seed germination and growth of indigenous crops, as well as contributing valuable knowledge towards enhancing food security through effective legume cultivation strategies.
