Readiness of residential social workers to accompany dying persons – a pilot study (the Czech Republic)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The present paper focuses on the perception of residential social workers of their own readiness to accompany dying persons in residential social services in the Czech Republic. The pilot study uses a qualitative strategy carried out in a selected retirement home (semi-structured interviews with 9 employees, coding, categorization and thematic analysis). Based on the analysis and interpretation of the results the following 5 areas were defined: (1) Feelings and experience with death; (2) Accompanying; (3) Communication; (4) Professional duties; (5) Readiness to accompany dying persons. Moreover, a competence model was defined for residential social workers who accompany dying persons. The process of accompanying is perceived by the employees as follows: presence (being with the dying person), saturation of (dysfunctional) needs of the dying person including spiritual needs, all this with the knowledge of the life story (biography) of the dying person.
