The Bohuslav Martinů Institute's Database, supported by the Bohuslav Martinů Foundation, comprehensively records thousands of Martinů's outgoing and incoming correspondence from 1905-1959. While many received documents were lost due to his transient lifestyle, surviving materials are preserved in the Bohuslav Martinů Center in Polička. Since 2005, Palacký University Olomouc has systematically processed this collection, publishing over 700 letters in a 12-volume critical edition and online. These letters, sent to family, collaborators Miloslav Bureš, Miloš Šafránek, Zdeněk Zouhar, Karel Šebánek and Frank Rybka, offer extraordinary insights into Martinů's creative inspirations, compositional methods, and astonishing speed of work, as well as his efforts to secure lost manuscripts and navigate financial pressures. They reveal his astute observations on political events, like the Hungarian Uprising, and clearly formulated aesthetic views, including his criticisms of dodecaphony and New Music. Editing this correspondence involved addressing Martinů's distinctive linguistic quirks and his varied naming for compositions and individuals. Despite Martinů's pragmatic approach to record-keeping and even his instructions for letters to be destroyed for safety, his family's preservation efforts proved invaluable. This extensive correspondence is a crucial primary source, informing numerous scholarly works, and enriching our understanding of Martinů's life, art, and historical context across multiple disciplines.
