Alternative Features of a Swimming Club
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The paper presents a case study of a Czech swimming club. It does not, however, introduce the swimming club as a part of the mainstream sports. By contrast, it focuses on those features of the club and its training units that resemble frequently mentioned constitutive facets of alternative sports. The study is based on qualitative interviews and uses the concept of subcultural capital as a tool for capturing dominant values and norms within the community of competitive swimmers. Hence, not only mainstream characteristics are revealed, typical for the mainstream sports, but also those, which are frequently present in studies within alternative sports such as a negative view of mass media and commercial interests. Further, topics of identity construction of swimmers and power relations within the club are considered.
