Role of Regional Integration in Attracting Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) into the Manufacturing Sectors of Africa: A Systematic Review

This paper examines the impact of regional integration on foreign direct investment (FDI) in African manufacturing, with particular emphasis on the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AFCFTA). The findings indicate that membership in a regional integration agreement with a home country increases the flow of FDI by approximately 27 percent, primarily due to improved market access, lower commercial costs, and a more favorable investment climate. A critical analysis of high-impact journals from sources such as EconLit, Scopus, JSTOR, and Google Scholar reveals the significant role of regional integration in attracting inward investment. When the AfCFTA boosts the inflow of FDI, benefits trickle down asymmetrically to member countries. Maximizing economic growth requires stronger institutions, better infrastructure, and improved policies. In addition, FDI stimulates technology transfer, skills development, and industrial innovation. Long-term sustainability depends on protecting intellectual property, disseminating knowledge, and sustaining investment. Future research should investigate the impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on sustainable development, regional integration, and external shocks, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
