Effects of shortening the dry period of dairy cows on milk production, energy balance, health, and fertility: A systematic review.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
A dry period of six to eight weeks for dairy cows is well known to be optimal to maximise milk production in the next lactation. Recently, several studies have shed a different light on this long tradition of a dry period for dairy cows. Shortening or omitting the dry period shifts milk production from the critical period shortly after calving to the weeks before calving, when the energy demands for milk production can be matched easily by feed intake. Available studies illustrate that this partial shift in milk production has the potential to improve the energy balance and reduce health and fertility disorders of dairy cows in early lactation. The objective of this study is to systematically review the current knowledge on dry period length in relation to milk production characteristics, energy balance, fertility, and health of cows and calves using original studies on planned animal experiments. Furthermore, for variables where at least five studies are available a meta-analysis appr
