The paper is focused on the situation on the coffee market. The coffee commodity chain is described inclusive of main characteristics of particular vertical stages. Increasingly globalized commodity chains and rising public concern for quality, safety and methods of agri-food production resulted in emergence of several schemes of coffee certification as a possibility to raise the economic, social and environmental standards of coffee production and trading. In the paper there are characterized five certification schemes presently operating for coffee and their advantages for producers and environment. The importance of consumer choice and its impact on all stages of the commodity chain is emphasized. The factors that prompt consumers to buy certified coffee and equally factors that keep them from such a purchase are also discussed. There are some recommendations for particular members of coffee commodity chain concluded, that should help to enhance demand for certified coffee.
