It is in the interest of every fuel chip producer to know the running costs, energy intensity and profit maximization prior to and after the purchase of the machine. The manufacturer frequently declares the machine technical parameters and performance for ideal operating conditions. The machine however often operates under conditions which significantly affect its efficiency with the resulting change in the production volume and unit costs. This paper examines and assesses the actual performance and running costs of the JENZ 420 chipper. It compares general calculation elaborated on the basis of information from the manufacturer to real costs ensuing from the machine operation. Actual performance and costs were studied in detail for the period of the first four years after the purchase of the machine. The costs are divided into acquisition, running and other costs. Total costs are subsequently converted into unit costs according to the expected output, on the basis of anticipated lifet
