Comparison of effects of butorphanol, buprenorphine, fentanyl and methadone on intraocular pressure and pupil size in healthy dogs
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The short-term effect of selected analgesics on intraocular pressure and pupil size has not been described yet. A prospective, randomized, double "blinded" study was performed. Fifty healthy dogs with no ocular abnormalities, allocated to five groups (n = 10) receiving either butorphanol 0.2 mg kg 1 IV, buprenorphine 0.01 mg kg-1 IV, fentanyl 0.01 mg kg-1 IV, methadone 0.3 mg kg-1 IV or saline 0.2 mL kg-1 IV. Intraocular pressure (IOP) by applanation tonometry (Tonopen), pupil size (PS) by Schirmer tear test strip gauge, HR, fR, SAP and DAP were measured before and 5 and 10 minutes after medication. For statistical analysis ANOVA and Dunett tests were used. Ten minutes after IV administration in dogs fentanyl significantly increases IOP. Butorphanol, fentanyl and methadone significantly decrease PS. Nevertheless, presented changes are clinically insignificant. All procedures were carried out with present code of the Czech Republic and with consent of the Ethics Committee of the University of Veterinary and Pharmaceutical Sciences Brno. Above mentioned techniques didn?t exceed commonly used clinical procedures.
