Influence of 30-minute continuous intravenous administration of fentanyl or lidocaine on intraocular pressure in dogs: preliminary results.
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The aim of this study was to assess the effects of 30-minute continuous intravenous administration of two analgesics on intraocular pressure in healthy dogs. This was a prospective, randomized, double "blinded" clinical study. Twelve client-owned healthy dogs, body weight 4.8 kg (1.0 ? 11.0) (median, minimum ? maximum) and age 8.4 years (3.5 ? 20.0), 8 males and 4 females of different breeds with no ocular abnormalities scheduled for periodontal treatment were randomly allocated into two groups receiving intravenously either fentanyl 0.005 mg kg 1 + 0.005 mg kg 1 h 1 (group FEN) or lidocaine 1 mg kg 1 + 1 mg kg 1 h 1 (group LID). Intraocular pressure (IOP; TonoPen XL), pupil size (PUP; pupil gauge), heart rate (HR), respiratory frequency (fR) and systolic and diastolic arterial pressures (SAP, DAP; Cardel 9401) were measured prior to (baseline) and during continual drug administration at 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30 minutes. Data were analyzed by Shapiro Wilk, ANOVA and Dunnett?s tests. In the FEN group a significant decrease of HR was observed at T10 (P = 0.0431). Significantly lower HR was observed in FEN group at T10 (P = 0.003), T20 (P = 0.0070) and T30 (P = 0.0188) compared to LID group. Within 30 minutes of continuous intravenous administration of fentanyl or lidocaine no significant changes of intraocular pressure or pupil size were detected. Lower heart rate after fentanyl administration were noted only. Evaluated protocols are considered save in patients where fluctuation of IOP or changes in pupil size are undesirable.
