Periodic Acid-Schiff-positive structures and age-related pigment accumulation in the ovary of the guinea pig (Cavia porcellus)
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
Periodic Acid-Schiff (PAS) staining method is used in descriptive studies of ovaries in various animal species. The PAS visualises sulfomucins, sialomucins and neutral mucosubstances. The aim of this study was to use PAS staining in the samples of guinea pig ovaries, as the PAS-positivity in these organs had not been previously described. The PAS-positive structures found included: zona pellucida of the oocyte, liquor folliculi in the tertiary follicles. Accumulation of PAS-positive ceroid/lipofuscin was found in 71% of guinea pigs older than 1 year but not in younger guinea pigs. Thus, the accumulation of ceroid/lipofuscin that is often described as an age-related change in ovaries of mice and rats commonly occurs also in guinea pigs. This study confirmed that the PAS staining is a method which can be successfully used for distinguishing the aforementioned structures in guinea pig ovaries.
