Beyond the concept of the family: The characteristics of teachers' understanding of the concept of family

  • Popis výsledku v původním jazyce

The curriculum of primary and nursery schools in the Czech Republic includes the subject of family as one of the main themes. Teachers' subjective theories about the family can affect this issue; therefore, this article's attention is focused on the detection of these implicit theories of teachers. This paper describes the results obtained on the basis of frequency analysis of the verbs used to define the concept of the family (N=219 future and practicing teachers). The results show that teachers' implicit verbal concept of family is derived from at least one of the three aspects: an emotional attribute (family is people linked by an emotional bond), structural attribute (family mainly consists of parents and their children), and location attribute (family is the place where we grow up and to where we return, family is home). This paper further explores these attributes.
