Der aus Mähren stammende Dominikaner Vincent Zapletal OP (1867-1938) gehört zu den wichtigsten Wegbereitern der historisch-kritischen Methode in der katholischen Bibelwissenschaft. In diesem Kapitel möchte man auf drei verbundene Aspekte konzentrieren. An erster Stelle sind dies die von Zapletal als Wissenschaftler und Professor für alttestamentliche Exegese angewendeten und durchgesetzten Prinzipien für das Studium der Bibel als eines heiligen, inspirierten und kanonischen Textes. Als Zweites fragen wir nach der Verankerung von Zapletals wissenschaftlicher Arbeit in der Gemeinschaft weiterer Angehöriger des Dominikanerordens im Albertinum an der Fribourger theologischen Fakultät (Bernard Allo, Vincent Rose) wie auch nach der persönlichen Beziehung Zapletals zum Ordensmagister (dem sel. Hyacinthe-Maria Cormier) als notwendiger Voraussetzung nicht nur für seine wissenschaftlichen Resultate, sondern auch für seine Fähigkeit, dem Ansturm ungerechter Kritik und dem Unverständnis seitens der katholischen Traditionalisten standzuhalten. Als letztes Thema sollen die bedeutenden Spuren aufgezeigt werden, die weitere tschechische Dominikaner in der modernen tschechischen katholischen Bibelwissenschaft hinterlassen haben.

The Moravian Dominican Vincent Zapletal (1867-1938) stands out as one of the pioneers of the historical-critical method in Catholic Bible studies at the beginning of the 20th century. This article examines the work of Zapletal and the challenges he faced in opening himself to the new methods in biblical exegesis at the time. Three issues in particular are addressed: First, Zapletal’s efforts to reconcile the insights of the new methods in biblical exegesis, history and archeology with traditional views and the hermeneutics of Catholic Theology; second, Zapletal&apos;s loyalty to like-minded progressive colleagues (Rose, Allo, Rowan) and the Master of the Order Cormier as well as his general allegiance to the Dominican Order during the machinations he experienced from conservative Bible scholars and militant traditionalists; third, Zapletal’s importance for the Czech Dominican Province and Czech Bible studies, given the fact that most of his writings he published in German and Latin
