The 2009 Presidential Elections: Poverty or Ethnicity? What Is Dividing Bolivia
Popis výsledku v původním jazyce
The premature presidential elections held in Bolivia at the end of 2009 gave a landslide victory to left-wing candidate Evo Morales and catapulted him to his second presidential office. In addition to the ongoing trend of growing mobilization of poor indigenous populations, these elections also confirmed the growing cleavage of Bolivian society. On the Bolivian political scene the cleavage is represented by two antagonistic organizations; the first is Morales?s Movement for Socialism (Movimiento al Socialismo, MAS) which received support especially in the Western departments traditionally populated by poor indigenous Indians; the second is the right-wing Plan Progress for Bolivia ? National Convergence (Plan Progreso para Bolivia ? Convergencia Nacional, PPB ? CN), which received support especially in the natural gas-rich Eastern departments (in the so-called rich Half Moon ? Media Luna). What is causing Bolivia?s divisions? Is it the economic welfare of the voters or their ethnic back
